An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Supported Me Land the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a travel partner. Because my friend was exploring starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a big ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I shared that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I ought to seek a job with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where anything feels possible – she responded: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to reach out at an elite institution and ask for a job. Moreover, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York led me to a position in Switzerland where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
