Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters
A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these drugs should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
