McDonald's has pulled a holiday advertisement created via generative AI following facing considerable public disapproval.

The brief film was created with the help of generative AI clips and was originally uploaded on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Social Media Criticism and Decision to Pull

Following its publication, viewers on social media denounced the use of AI in the advert. A number of called it "uncanny" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This moment serves as an valuable learning as we examine the effective utilization of AI," stated a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was produced for the brand by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It depicted various scenarios that might go awry during the festive season, using the slogan "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Movement of AI-Generated Ads

Adverts that incorporate generative AI have become a growing trend among large corporations, particularly for the Christmas period.

  • Another beverage giant has recently released consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Since videos created with current AI video tools are more likely to degrade the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be only a few seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also provoked fears about the replacement of human roles in the production industry, with some observers pointing out it might reduce work for camera crews.

Response from the Production Company

Following the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

Bridge claimed, the production process required "seven weeks" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then edited during the edit "in the same way we would on any traditional production".

"This was not an experiment," she commented. "The result was a finished piece."

Divisive Public Reception

While the McDonald's ad was predominantly criticized, the reception for some AI-assisted campaigns has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated Christmas ad from another major brand reportedly achieved a significant "positive sentiment rating" from the public.

However, other businesses have also encountered scrutiny for employing AI in marketing. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some called "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The situation highlights the evolving debate within the marketing and production industries about the balance between technological innovation and audience reception.
