The Fallout of the Nigerian Spectacular $25 M Museum and the Benin Bronzes
Nigeria's impressive new Museum of West African Art (Mowaa) has landed in the crosshairs of regional political struggles during the time it was scheduled to β but did not manage β to begin operations to the visitors for the first time.
The Grand Vision
The large-scale complex sits in the core of Benin City, main city of the southern state of Edo β and features an excavation site and facilities designed by celebrated dual heritage architect Sir David Adjaye, particularly noted for the National Museum of African American History and Culture that was inaugurated in the US capital in 2016.
It has been 60 months in the making β and is envisioned to showcase both the heritage and the present of artistic expression in the area renowned for the cultural artifacts, cultural objects looted from the royal palace by UK forces in the nineteenth century.
Preparation and Promise
It is notable β and before the scheduled opening, Mowaa was buzzing with staff committed to show it is a venue that can match renowned museums and galleries in the West.
Internally art restorers precisely unwrapped cultural items from secure wrapping, inspecting each artifact and taking detailed documentation before positioning them on exhibition areas and bases.
Experts fine-tuned climate control systems. In the scientific facility, officers set up equipment designed to maintain centuries-old objects.
Investment and Economic Plans
The initiative has been the brainchild of investor Phillip Ihenacho β currently Mowaa's executive director.
"I hope us to have a substantial economic impact on local residents in the vicinity," he stated to the press, noting that he wanted to make Benin City "a cultural destination."
Mowaa, a not-for-profit national foundation, sees itself generating more than 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and contributing over $80m each year to the local cultural industry through collaborations and events.
Financial Support and Government Issues
It has taken $25m to get here β capital collected from various donors, such as the European governments, the London institution and the local administration.
But now the state authorities has revoked permission from below it β revoking the occupancy of the site on which the building was erected.
An Edo state spokesperson stated this was because in the original paperwork it had identified as the Edo-named institution β and it had since removed "Edo" from its title.
Demonstrations and Government Action
This statement followed rallies on Sunday, when protesters invaded the complex calling for it be called the Benin Royal Museum.
A boisterous assembly harassed foreign guests at the museum ahead of the opening β forcing them to be quickly removed under security protection.
National leader Bola Tinubu has even become involved to attempt to settle the dispute, establishing a presidential committee to do some damage control.
Political Complexities
But in what way has this turned into so divisive β and such a reputation problem?
Much of it stems from internecine rivalries at a local state level, as it was Edo's previous governor Godwin Obaseki β whose administration ended the previous year β who was a major backer of the project.
And it looks like the administration of the current leader, a strong supporter of the regional monarch, called the Oba, may desire increased control in the initiative. The protesters on the weekend, for case, were demanding that the museum be positioned under the authority of the royal leader.
The Cultural Artifacts Debate
This brings into focus the controversial matter of the cultural artifacts, one of Africa's most renowned cultural treasures.
Because though the institution does ultimately welcome visitors, these bronzes will be noticeably missing.
They are metal, elephant tusk and timber sculptures that once decorated the king's residence of the historical empire before UK forces looted them in 1897 during a colonial invasion.
Currently, many continue to be spread across museums in the West -- such as the London museum, German museum and the New York institution.
Return Initiatives
Their return has become one of the most debated debates in the global art world. About 150 have currently been returned β and further are due to follow.
When ideas for the facility in the urban center were first announced in the pre-pandemic era, the key players on the country's cultural sector hoped it would become their perfect venue β a advanced complex to display them to the world.
But the issues became confused recently after the federal government announced that the traditional ruler would be the proper guardian of returned objects β and the royal household advocated for a institution under the monarch's supervision, against the preferences of Obaseki.
Political Navigation
This left Mowaa in a delicate position: expressing a clear stance on restitution while being careful on ownership β and stressing its wider mission, which led to|c
